On the 11/12/06 I received the following news from the USA about the FN test. At present I don't know if OptiGen is licensed to test samples from dogs outside the USA and Canada, or whether another lab will be available in Europe, but as soon as I know I will update this news :

The FN (Familial Nephropathy) test that we have been waiting for will be available through OptiGen very soon. They have signed the licensing agreement and they are now licensed to do the test in the  US & Canada.  They are working on the details and will get the information up on their website www.optigen.com just as soon as possible, maybe even as soon as a week. The testing may start as early as January. This test will be a blood test, not a cheek swab. The  actual price of the test has not been released yet.

So in about a week from now, watch for more details on their website, www.optigen.com

THIS IS A QUOTE FROM JEANETTE FELIX OF OPTIGEN, USA, RECEIVED BY EMAIL TODAY, RE THE FN TEST WHICH IS AVAILABLE IN THE USA. IT HERALDS WONDERFUL NEWS FOR THOSE WHO HAVE ALREADY USED THE prcd PRA TEST. PLEASE NOTE HER FINAL SENTENCE HOWEVER, AND BE PATIENT IN WAITING FOR THE FINAL DETAILS. THOSE WILL BE AVAILABLE ON THE OPTIGEN WEBSITE (www.optigen.com), here, and on the EFNF site.

We'll be putting full information on our website within a week, but I can tell you briefly that OptiGen does have the right to FN  test any samples from Europe THAT WE ALREADY tested for prcd-PRA. But we  can't take in any new samples for the FN test from Europe, per the license  agreement.  We have frozen sample stored from all ECS PRA tests done  previously, and we've decided to make that available for FN testing, even if the owner did not pay the fee for long-term storage. We hope that will help many obtain the new FN test more easily. Please ask folks to wait just a bit longer for full details.

Congrats to Hannah, my wonderful daughter, on her 14th birthday...the dogs think you're the BEST and so do I !!

Little bit of 'doggy' news now.....Congrats to Val Flowers who won the Minor Puppy Dog class at London Cocker championship show last weekend with our Charbonnel Double Dutch's young black son Kelbonny Goes Dutch, proudly bred by Heather Manzie. We are awaiting a photo, but do have a photo of the litter brother, Lance- who Heather has kept - she seems to be very pleased with him.....

A wonderful weekend amongst some very kind, interesting, doggie people .Super organisation, nothing too much trouble to the NKK officials, I found some beautiful cockers amongst my entry at the Nordic Winner show and some decisions were hard, especially among the solid bitches. My BoB was the black bitch Manaca's Undesigned Dream. I apparently gave her grand-dam, a blue, the C.C. when I last judged in Sweden. Thank you to those exhibitors who came to me and thanked me for my opinion, even though you were not included in top honours, your comments were appreciated. As you said, you travelled to the show for my opinion, and got it. Isn't that what showing is all about?

It's hard to please everyone - I have always judged the dogs before me on the day, not by any previous wins or titles, I don't follow other peoples dogs quite that seriously to know those details. I was very disappointed with some heads in the parti-colours (especially the size and shape of eyes) and front movement, two important points where short-fallings should be addressed....

Congratulations to the beautiful American Cocker bitch Caci's Cute Carmen at Ld's, my BoB ,for her 2nd in Group 8 behind the BIS winning Flat Coat. (Photo to come)

Phone call today from the Norsk Kennel Klub to say that the Nordic Winner 2006 show has received a record entry ,over a 1000 dogs more than ever before. An excellent entry awaits the Cocker Spaniel judge, who is now only allowed to judge American Cockers too,as the number of dogs that a judge is able to judge per day ,according to NKK rules ,in Norway is 80.These 2 breeds alone have 86 dogs entered.

Please click here to view the (hopefully) last list of Year Books available in aid of the EFNF. Absolute bargains - but please remember cost of postage must be added for any Year Books sent out.

There is almost another £2000 in the EFNF account now to go to the USA, please help me to make this last effort to help replace the thousands of dollars spent on the research into the fatal disease which is Familial Nephropathy.............

As there have been a number of suspect FN deaths in the UK and overseas this summer I am including an edited, highlighted version of Dr. Lees Summary in this NEWS PAGE to stress the importance of correct diagnosis using the specified equipment and tests he recommends.

It is dangerous to assume that a young cocker spaniel in renal failure has died of FN without SEEING the evidence with immunostaining and/or the use of  transmission electron microscopy. I am not a scientist, and I do not believe in making what are after all professional, informed judgements on the merits of recent cases. But I do believe it is VERY important that the right diagnosis is obtained on each and every case, and I do KNOW that very few laboratories/universities are equipped to make the final judgement as they don't HAVE electron microscopes, or they make a diagnosis based only on light microscopy.

If you read Dr. Lees' summary you will see he stresses that the differences between FN affected kidney tissue and that of a dog dying from another type of renal failure are very distinctive, but only evident with the equipment and method of testing he recommends, and NOT with light microscopy.

The full summary is available for you all on the EFNF site, and if you wish to print it off for

your vet PLEASE DO.

CLICK HERE for the edited, highlighted version.

Congratulations to Tracey on winning Veteran Bitch with Peggy, Charbonnel Playtime ,at Darlington Championship show today, her debut in the 'oldies' class !

Just lately, due to personal commitments/health problems we have not been able to attend the shows we intended to, and instead spent time at home with pups etc. During that time, I'm pleased to say, Martin's latest harness horse, Thornton Jag, has excelled himself on the track, winning 2 of his 3 starts in good company. A win which is based wholly on performance has a certain satisfaction that a win at a dog show doesn't. After all, no-one else can influence what happens in a race, it is up to the horse and the driver to perform to the best of their ability within their capabilities, whereas a win based on opinion is open to abuse, as in fact is any competition where a ' judge' is involved. We all have to hope that judges only have the best motives in making their decisions, that they are judging the dogs and not the owners, or feathering their own nests.

When showing is merely a hobby it is hard enough to find money to spend on entries, without the added hurdle of then finding that judges have pre-conceived ideas about their placings/awards. So much better to show under those who have a genuine passion for the breed and set out in the morning to find those dogs that best fit the standard in their opinion. Those are the judges who will continue to be rewarded with large entries of dogs to go over, and who I, for one, would show under every time, regardless of their placing of my dogs, as I would know that the decision is based on sound knowledge and not personal gain.

Once again Lyn comes up with the goods..."quality not quantity" is her motto !!

Congratulations to Quintavia Time Lord (Charbonnel Interlord x Charbonnel Wild Child at Quintavia) on his 2nd placing at his debut appearance at Ashbourne show. I could tell that Tracey was well-pleased with her new black boys performance !!

13/08/06
We had a day out at Trawden Agricultural show today, where the breed judge was Mrs. B. Robertson.

Hannah showed her pup, Charbonnel Pinny 'n' Pearls, and won her puppy class, which I was very proud of, I thought she did a wonderful job and Lulu moved out, covering the ground really well, and we all thought she looked a picture. Fair play to Han, she groomed, bathed and dried her herself this time.....

Teddy was Best of Breed, but we didn't stay as the day was obviously going to be a long one, and we had a birthday party to attend.

Photo shows Hannah with Lulu, who is looking the part now at 11 months we think...she'll probably drop her coat soon just to spite us !!

01/08/06

When this sort of news hits the headlines it puts any win into perspective...can you imagine how it must feel to have your dog shot in front of you, through no fault of his own ? Time to worry if you have been silly enough to export to China.........

Ferelith Somerfield judged cockers today at South Wales K.A. and we had a successful day, with Interlord winning his class and the Reserve Dog C.C.

While filling in Teddy's RCC card the judge remarked that he was very promising and she especially liked his movement, so that was heartening. Babs, Starlette, was 2nd in her class, and moved well too, so no complaints there.

Well, now I have the news that I have waited for for SO long. Dr.Murphy of A & M University, Texas, asked for swabs and bloods from my dogs to subject them to the F.N.Test, which he had developed following the discovery of the gene mutation, as part of the pilot study. I now have the results.

I am VERY happy to say that all but two of my dogs tested clear for Familial Nephropathy, but unfortunately my beautiful Frankie and one of his grand-daughters ( who has already been re-homed ) were returned as carriers. All his progeny that I have,4 bitches and one dog, are clear though, which must be a positive . I will continue to show him, and I do hope that he will continue to be judged on his merits and not on his health status, which would be very sad. To all intents and purposes he is a normal dog, as with any carrier of a disease/condition, but he has the genetic potential to produce F.N if mated to another normal-looking carrier.

As I have always wanted to be open about dogs health I have chosen to put this information on MY web-site, as it pertains to MY dogs. I do not wish to see my dogs names on anybody else's site, either here or overseas, as part of some list (or some witch-hunt that others may choose to stir-up in the twisted belief that they  want to be 'open' too....this seems always to be directed towards other peoples dogs but not their own) For this reason I re-iterate that all information on my site is copyright to me*. If anyone wants to contact me about anything to do with my dogs then please don't hesitate to email or phone.

So, I now have cockers who are  Optigen  normal/clear, F.N. tested, hip-scored, happy, and though I say it myself, not bad-looking either. How lucky am I ???????

WONDERFUL NEWS from Spain !!!  ANOTHER Charbonnel Champion in Esp.Ch. CHARBONNEL HEART THROB....MANY CONGRATULATIONS to the Molinos family and to Midas, who is also producing his excellent cockery type in his progeny - his daughter NEWWAY DEMETER won the CAC in bitches at the same show where Midas completed his title....Thanks Javier for keeping me informed.

22/05/06

Good news from Finland !!! A record entry of 175 cockers awaits the judges on the 3rd of June......(click here for details of the venue etc.) THANK YOU !!

18/5/06

The NEWS is sinking in now, and how elated I feel that Dr. Lees, Dr. Murphy and Ashley Davidson have come up with the 'goods'......a test for Familial Nephropathy within a few months and an end in sight for this awful disease, or at least within the community of breeders who are aware of the problem and how to deal with it. You cannot imagine how thrilling it was to sit there at the National and hear Ashley announce that she had found the gene mutation - the highlight of the week for many of us I know. During his presentation Dr. Lees stressed how " with WISE use of the test, using carriers on clears is OK " (quote) He emphasised how the test will enable us to rid our lines of the possibility of producing affected animals in just one generation, and how it is important not to lose quality within the gene pool whilst eradicating the disease. As in any hereditary disease ,an animal who is a carrier is physically normal, and will not be at risk of producing the condition in the future if breeding is controlled (by only mating to a clear animal )or prevented. Use of the test gives us the opportunity to prevent death from FN.

This test, when available, will be useful in cases where a cocker is in renal failure, but where symptoms are not necessarily indicative of FN. The test will help rule out Familial Nephropathy as a cause of the problem, or else confirm that the affected cocker IS actually in failure due to FN, which will be useful in some countries where discrepancies have occurred.

My one hope is that we breeders can embrace this new era of scientific progress and move forward in the manner that Dr. Lees and his team would wish us to......so that his years of dedication to the cause have not been wasted. Please don't bury your heads in the sand ,stand up and be counted, and lets work together for the healthy future of our breed. It is more commendable to recognise a problem and deal with it than it is to ignore it or refuse to admit there IS a problem and hope it goes away. It won't......

14/05/06

Further to the initial announcement, the following has been released from Texas A & M.

Good news! Researchers at Texas A&M University have identified the gene mutation that causes 'Familial Nephropathy' or 'FN' in English Cocker Spaniels. The research team announced this discovery to the English Cocker Spaniel Club of America at the National Specialty in Sacramento, CA, on May 11, 2006.

A genetic test for carriers has been developed, and the test is expected to become available to owners and breeders of English Cocker Spaniels world-wide within the next 4 months.

Further details about the test (i.e., who to contact, sample submission procedures, and cost) will be announced as soon the test is licensed to a commercial provider.

Wonderful News

The European FN Fund is thrilled to announce that Dr. Keith Murphy, Dr. George Lees & Miss Ashley Davidson of A & M University, have today revealed that they have found the Gene Mutation responsible for FAMILIAL NEPHROPATHY.

This signals the start of a new era in the fight against this killer disease, and gives us, the dedicated Cocker Spaniel breeders of the world, an opportunity to clear affected lines.

Our heartfelt thanks must go out to the dedicated people who have worked so hard for so long on our behalf.

Jinty Gill Davis'  critique was published in the Dog World today. I am absolutely thrilled with her kind, constructive words about ' MY BOY' :

" RCC, Platt's Sh. Ch. Charbonnel Warlord,7 years black,  looking very fit, muscular and in hard condition, commanded attention, clean skull, good stop, shapely eye and expression, strong muzzle, good head carriage, clean neck, fine shoulders, well-constructed forehand, sturdy ribcage, powerful loin, good legs and feet, strong well-defined hind-quarters with good tail carriage, strode out soundly covering the ground with drive and free stride. Headed this extremely strong class, many of which were very worthy of mention. If only the prize cards could have been C.C.'s. "

CONGRATULATIONS to Christina Daniels in Sweden on her excellent Optigen results with CHARBONNEL OOH LA LA who is Optigen Clear/Normal ( A1) for prcd PRA.

Another enjoyable weekend for our kennel at Midland Cocker Spaniel Club. Warlord was once again declared BVIS by Dog judge Andrew Jones and Bitch judge Mark Boswell. Young Starlette came away with a 1st and a 3rd and our beautiful Dash (Fair Femme) had to be content with a 3rd while in a class with older bitches. Little Lulu wasn't placed....her woolly coat is pegging her back at the mo, but its not ready, and regardless of what magical gadgets are out there, we shall wait until it comes out with finger and thumb !! We also won on the raffle - what a good day !

Since I have had a number of phone calls /emails about a Swedish website and its content I wish to put the record straight with this link to the Swedish Cocker Club's own website, with details of it's AGM held on 25th March 2006.

I would also like to re-iterate that there is no time limit/time restriction on Optigen testing of cockers for prcd PRA, and that DNA testing is still voluntary in the UK, leaving it up to the individual breeder/owner to decide whether he/she wishes to monitor their dogs health. My own thoughts on these issues are well-known, however there is NO Kennel Club rule governing an owners decision at this present moment in time.

Congratulations to Hannah on winning Best Junior Handler with Charbonnel Starlette at North Wales Cocker Spaniel Club Open show under Janice Beever.

Today was North of England's Championship show, and the dogs had a creditable day. Dog judge was Jackie Marris Bray (Helenwood) and bitch judge was Denise Lumley (Jimmison). Hannah was handling Pinny 'n' Pearls on her debut, and she was pulled out in the final 6 in a good Minor Puppy Bitch class. C. Fair Femme was 2nd in MP Bitch, and C. Starlette was 2nd in the Solid Puppy Bitch class. Our 'young chap' Warlord won Best Veteran in show, which was wonderful - he loves being back in the ring !!

This was the day I had been looking forward to so much for so long....for many reasons, but foremost because this was the day that my soulmate Frankie (Sh. Ch. Charbonnel Warlord) was going to get the chance to ' tread the green carpet' once again. He endured hours of hand-stripping in preparation for this day, and I felt SO proud of him when he powered into the ring, like he had never been away ! He could not wait to get on that table ........there were 24 in the Veteran dog class and he waited and watched, standing at the end of his lead, tail constantly wagging ,as each dog took his turn to be 'gone over' and moved, quietly waiting for his chance to show off...he knows the ropes better than anyone and he loves it ! To win VETERAN class was a joy, and to then go on and win the Reserve Dog C.C. behind the C.C. winner Sh. Ch. Quettadene Copper Glow was more than wonderful......THANK YOU Frankie for being such a star, a one-in-a-million dog.

I was also very pleased with Cilla (Sh. Ch. Charbonnel Silhouette) as she won Open Bitch, and Sh. Ch. Charbonnel Shake'n'Stevens was a very creditable 4th in an Open Dog class of 14,13 of which were champions - congrats to Mike and Edith.

I was very pleased to hear from Fiona Culatto that she had a successful day at the show in Granada, when her black bitch Charbonnel Marinette won the CAC under Edwardo Gonzalez Gilbert, and little Charbonnel Cute'n'Cuddly was judged ' Very Good' - the highest grade a puppy can be awarded- on her debut in the ring. Congratulations to Fiona, Peter and their connections on this wonderful achievement.

Our young bitches did really well at Home Counties Cocker Club Championship show under Mrs. Helle Dan Palsson of Denmark (check out her website : www.dan-l.dk) Little Dash - Charbonnel Fair Femme -(up-to-date photo to come...) at her first championship show, won a creditable 2nd in Minor Puppy bitch ,and Charbonnel Starlette, Babs, won the Solid Puppy bitch class and BEST PUPPY in SHOW, with the agreement of the Dog judge Mrs. Anne Richardson (Fionnrua) Hopefully I will have a photo from the day soon....

Kelly and Adam had a good day with Charbonnel Promises at Keladity, winning 2nd in the Limit and Open classes, both well-filled quality classes, thus qualifying her for her Stud Book number and for Crufts entry for life. Well Done, Charbonnel Norfolk !!

To read Mrs Dan Palsson's show report visit her site via this link: http://www.dan-l.dk/Kennel%20Dan-L/pages/Homecounties.html I felt Mrs. Dan Palsson went about her job in a quiet, efficient way, she knew what she was looking for and did not have to spend too long making her decisions, which was refreshing.

If any previous reference to this show caused distress to any officer or member of the committee then please accept my apologies. This was not meant to be in any way derogatory or hurtful.

Our black and tan puppy bitch,8 months old Charbonnel Duette did exceptionally well today, winning Best Puppy in Show in hot competition at Coventry Cocker Spaniel Club under breed specialist Linda Crowley (Ashalon). Teddy won one of his classes too - he now needs 2 points for his JW, with just one show (and two classes !!) to go before his 18 month birthday. Keeping everything crossed.....
