The last show of the year today for me - North Western Counties Spaniel Club Open Show - and Cilla won Best Opposite Sex under breed judge Kim Gain 'Molkara'.

Many thanks to all the latest contributors to the FN Fund, we are nearing £1000 now, which is a wonderful achievement, and I want to thank everyone for their contributions so far, especially my HANNAH, who has donated her CHRISTMAS  MONEY. In her very insistent words " if it helps Mum, I want to give some............" She is only just 12 years old ...

18/12/04
Charbonnel Eli left us for his new home in Finland with Eija Kaipainen, who has shown Charbonnel Ballad so successfully to so many champion titles.......We are already missing him, he was a real larger than life character, but we have maintained an interest in him, and hope to be able to go over and see him shown in the future. Good luck Eija with your new 'Scottish Treasure'!

10/12/04
Our PBGV's made their debut in the 'big' ring at the last champ show of the year, LKA, and bless them, they behaved impeccably !! Our Tommy, Charbonnel Tom Cruise, won his Puppy Dog class from an entry of 4, and, being the youngest, I thought he did very well. Doris, Charbonnel Doris Day, was at the other end of the line in her class, but nevertheless behaved really well. Our Many Thanks to the judge Mrs. L. Owens for her kind comments.

While at the show I was thrilled to receive more donations to the ECSCA's FN fund, the total of which is now at an amazing £805 ! Thank you to all those kind people who have contributed so far, list on the front page of this site.......There are still many exhibitors/breeders who haven't donated, and I will not pressurise anyone, but PLEASE consider how valuable a test for FN would be. You may not have had a case in your line, but who knows what is lurking out there ? Recessive genes are monsters, waiting to pounce, and they don't care on who !! No-one is exempt, and just a few pounds could make a difference ..........it's not an admission of guilt, just a way of showing how much you care for your chosen breed, the cocker spaniel. Please help me to raise £1000 before Christmas, so that I can buy the dollars while the rate is so favourable.

Thank you to those enthusiasts who donated to the FN fund at the show - see the new updated list for details of the latest contributors. I have now collected nearly £600,I would like to make it £1000 by Christmas, so as to make use of the very good exchange rate pound to dollar at the moment, so if you feel you can 'make a difference' and help us to get the all essential funding to the USA to help the scientists develop a test for FN carriers, please see me at LKA or phone/ write for details of how you can help. There is no minimum amount, any sum helps and will be received with thanks. All donations are receipted. Many, many thanks to you all.........

I only showed Frankie at the show. He was 2nd in a class of 3. Always a risk taking a top-winning dog out, 'head on the block' scenario, but of course there were many more judges outside the ring than in, and their compliments and kind comments were profuse. Many thanks to the overseas contingent for the attention they gave my boy.........

From the end of his noble nose to the tip of his level -set tail, from the top of his statuesque head to tip of his tight, thickly -padded feet, from the superb angle of his shoulder to upper-arm, to the curve of his superbly-muscled backend, he was brimming with health and showing off his beautiful, still very black, straight, hand-stripped coat.
I was the proudest person at the show on the day, because Frankie is mine, and if he never won another class, whether full of quality dogs or mediocre ones, he is still, in my eyes, the most beautiful creature alive. Thanks Frankie, for being a rock in a shifting tide........

Bronte went one better today at North Midlands and Eastern Counties Cocker Club Open Show by winning BIS under Tony Jury (Tibblestone Cockers and Labs) from an entry of 80 plus. Her wins in 3 classes also meant that she now has enough points for us to apply for her Junior warrant award....... Many Thanks !! We won a beautiful crystal bowl, about 31kg of complete dog food and £10 awarded by Mr. Ray Beardsley ,which we are donating to the FN fund.

27/11/04

Charbonnel Fair Rouge - Bronte - was awarded RBIS today at Coventry Cocker Club Open show under breed specialist Mrs. Carol Welch (Carhowel) from an entry of 60 plus. Thank you !! Congratulations to Jackie and Isla (Helenwood Irrisistabelle) on her BIS win.

14/11/04

Another wonderful day for Cilla, when she won Best in Show again under breed judge Mr. Peter Darby (Dargess) at the prestigious Midland Cocker Club Open show. He had a super quality entry of 130 cockers to go over (before absentees) with at  least 3 C.C. winners present.

06/11/04

Many thanks to the latest cocker enthusiasts who have donated money to the FN Fund.

Cilla enjoyed herself today, winning BIS in a quality entry at Rotherham Cocker Club Open show under Mrs. Kathy Kerr (Windgrove) Many thanks!!

23/10/04

I was granted the honour of judging bitches at the Deerhound Clubs Limit show today. With a super entry of 74 bitches giving an entry of 90 in total, I had a very enjoyable day with these most sporting of hound people.

Pictured are the Best Bitch (left) Phillips' Kilbourne Grey Ghost of Ladygrove and Reserve Best Bitch (right) the veteran winner Gilhooly's Kilbourne Anna Fearna at Nobys. Grey Ghost was also awarded Best in Show on the decision of the referee Mr. Keith Thornton. Well Done!!

22/10/04

Launched the appeal in the dog papers today for the collection in aid of the FN FUND in the USA ,run by the English Cocker Spaniel Club of America.

I was absolutely bowled over to receive a phone call from Lorraine Palmer (Robrainne) to say that she intends to donate ALL the proceeds from the sales of her very popular Cocker Spaniel Exhibitors Diaries to our FN fund in the UK this year. The sum normally amounts to £500. THANKS Lorraine, for that wonderfully generous gesture, what a GREAT start. !!

I intend to list everyone who donates to the fund on this site, so do please do your best to support us.....every little bit helps. (Click here to see list)

20/10/04

Made a decision today which I think can only be the right one for the future.......before I send any dogs/bitches overseas I will now have them blood-sampled for DNA testing, while they are still in my name, and then have the DNA stored with the Animal Health Trust. That way, if ever I have any problems with identity of my stock in other countries, I will have the means to prove parentage etc. I am also making moves to have all my dogs at home DNA tested too, as the AHT store DNA free of charge , on the understanding that they can use it for their own purposes in research. I think that's got to be a good deal, and can only be a positive forward move.

16/10/04

Congratulations to Mike and Edith and Jamie (aka Charbonnel Shake'n'Stevens JW 2.RCC's) on winning the R.C.C at North Wales Cocker Championship show under Mrs. J. Littlemore. I was told he looked superb and moved really well, and I am really pleased that Jamie is now looking so well as he matures. Keep up the good work !!!. Tracey also did well with Betty (Q. Quintessence) again, winning Graduate bitch and a 3rd in Open bitch under Mrs. F. Mace

WHAT A WONDERFUL DAY !! Because we haven't been to so many champ shows this year I decided to go to Ulster Cocker Championship show as the judge Mr. Ronnie Brown (Metkar cockers) was giving C.C's for the first time, always worth giving a judge a try when you don't know what they will do...... I was really thrilled to win the C.C. and BIS with my young red dog Charbonnel Double Dutch and the R.C.C in bitches with Frankette. The two youngsters, Silhouette and Fair Rouge also won their classes, so it was definitely worth the long day. I have to admit to having problems concentrating the next day at the PBGV judging seminar though!

Today Charbonnel Black'n'Silver (Sh. Ch.. Lindridge Star Turn x Charbonnel Pick'n'Mix JW) left us for his new home with Dipesh Pakrashi in India. 'Tonka' was tested Optigen A1 when he was 8 weeks old, so as such is the first cocker to hold this status in India. I do hope that his conformation and wonderful temperament will be useful to the cocker breeders on the Indian continent

Today found me judging cockers at TULLN in Austria. The dog show was the reason for me being in Austria, but my friend Amanda Cardoo and myself had a wonderful stay for 4 days, meeting old and new friends (the 'snorter' - Pia Razera Brulin, Winnies Labs, Sweden, for one !!- have not laughed so much in ages !!!! We had to be told to be quiet as we were waking the whole hotel up !!) Also dear  Laurent Pichard, my favourite 'American' man !!, and Tammas Jakkel, every now and then we bump into each other............. So, back to the show........Best Dog and BOB was the black Doubtless Black Petrs owned by Petr Studenik, and Best Bitch and RBOB was the black bitch Doubtless Mad Mosquito owned by Vesna Petrovic. I was told after the judging that these were mother and son (the dogs !!) and both by Charbonnel dogs, which was very interesting for me, the first time seeing in the flesh progeny from 2 of my exports to this part of the world. Thank you to everyone for your hospitality and kind words and gestures, and to Marie- Louise and Sissy for taking us around Vienna, such a beautiful city, and indulging us in superb coffee and chocolate cake !

Spent the day at Lancashire Cocker Open show ,always good fun with local cocker people, time to catch up with chat etc with Hilary Ladanowski, whose Towbray affix is more commonly seen on quality Irish Water Spaniels now. Hilary has had some super parti cockers in years gone by...... Today, under Nanette Howell, Waterwood, our Charbonnel Silhouette, 'Cilla' was Best Opposite Sex in Show. In the line-up also was Edith Fowles and Mike Wildman's Charbonnel Shake'n'Stevens, Liz and Lynsey Norris's Charbonnel Sugar'n'Spice and Tracey Herds Quintavia Quintessence (Roulette x Playtime at Q.) Well done everyone!!

Many thanks to Mark Collins (Candyke) for the Bitch C.C. and BOB with our Sh. Ch. Charbonnel Frankette J.W. at the SKC's second champ show of the year, and to Mr. Ed Simpson for being short listed in a strong Gundog Group. Bronte, Charbonnel Fair Rouge, also won her class which was an added bonus

18/08/04

Many thanks to all those friends who have sent me cards and letters and those who have phoned about the short paragraph I sent to the Dog World paper and it's content. I feel a great deal more positive now, and I think that maybe we can all do something to help Dr. Lees and his research. Thanks to those special friends who have been there through thick and thin for their moral support, and to Pedro Mamede for his continued help......

17/08/04

Dilys produced her litter, 12 pups !! She is coping well, rearing 7..........

while 2 of my beautiful, dependable, trustworthy cocker bitches have taken on 5 of the wiry, noisy, grey whirlwinds with their own black, laid-back puddings.!! Photo is of Shirley (Warlord x Jimmison Jingle) tending to her new charges with such attentiveness......who would have known that, when she had her first litter last year, all her pups had to be put on a parti bitch, who had one pup, because she wouldn't settle to feed them herself !!!??? Mother Nature moves in mysterious ways..........how glad I am that I gave her another chance to show what a super mother she can be !!

16/08/04

Pretty as paint.........

08/08/04

We had a wonderful day at Trawden Agricultural Show when Bronte - C. Fair Rouge- ended her puppy career by going Best Puppy in Show ALL breeds. Thanks to judges Mrs. June Henderson (breed and gundog group) and Mrs. Anne Hutchinson Best in Show and best Puppy in Show.

07/08/04

A great day at National Gundog when Cilla- C. Silhouette JW- won her junior bitch class under Mrs. Marion Sweeney and Harry - C. Double Dutch- won the Post Grad dog class under Jenny Miller. The bitch CC went to Lujesa Soul to Soul, a Warlord daughter, which was the one she needed for her crown - she is the 3rd black bitch by Frankie to win her Show Champion title - CONGRATULATIONS Sue and Annie !!

01/08/04

Wonderful weather, a small group of close friends and cocker spaniels, a recipe for a happy day....anything extra was a bonus.!! So when Charbonnel Double Dutch, our red dog Harry, was BIS at North Midlands and Eastern Counties Cocker Club Open show (out of an entry of 82) and Quintavia Quintessence, (Charbonnel Roulette x Charbonnel Playtime at Q.) owned by Tracey Herd, was RBIS, it was the icing on the cake......Cilla also won her Open solid bitch class and was ably handled by Hannah in the challenge. Many thanks to the judge elect Mr. David Bowers (Tudormist) for a very enjoyable day, and to the committee for the special prizes and the bags of food.......

Today I heard the very sad news that a puppy sired by one of my exported dogs had died in Spain of suspected Familial Nepropathy. This is devastating news for all concerned, but I guess when someone has owned and bred dogs for 27 years, and been with livestock most of their lives, there is always the risk that at some time there will be stumbling blocks thrown in our way. I have always been very keen on maintaining a high health status in my animals, having had EBL/IBR attested cattle and MV/EAE/Scrapie monitored sheep, and with the dogs I have always eye-tested annually and hip-scored all breeding stock (and that means X-raying AND SUBMITTING the plates !!) As my wallet allows I am also now taking advantage of the OPTIGEN DNA test for PRA. (please see the link on my links page) To maintain this outlook on disease and conditions affecting this lovely breed of ours, I have decided that the only way forward is to be positive and to do my best to help with the development of the test for the FN gene being worked on in the USA by Dr. George Lees, and with the kind help of Addi Pittman, the Health Co-Coordinator for the ECSCA, and all concerned, I intend to furnish Dr. Lees with any material he needs to further the research. I realise this will be a struggle and may be long-winded, but with the right approach from all breeders, who knows, we could have a test for FN in the next few years ? I am not the first breeder to be in this position, and undoubtedly won't be the last, so I intend to carry on doing my best to breed superlative healthy cockers. Those who have the breeds future at heart will react as I would expect, in the knowledge that when breeders and owners find themselves in this position, they need support and encouragement, not petty back-biting and gossip-mongering. No-one deliberately breeds unsound animals, what folly that would be, unless of course that is for research into a disease/condition, as in the early 1980's with FN........I am happy to discuss the above with any interested party.

IN MEMORIAM

Today I heard from Sara Cannervik in Sweden that her beloved dog Tonka has died. He was bred by me in February 1993, following a mating which I undertook just a week after Hannah was born, by Sh. Ch. Cleavehill Pot of Gold x Sh. Ch. Charbonnel Fair Cher. Sara made him up to a Swedish champion after she acquired him later in his life, having been passed to several homes. She has always kept in touch with me and I was so pleased that he found his way into her safe-keeping. Thanks Sara for caring for him so well, you were privileged to own such a wonderful dog, and he was extremely lucky to have you.

Rest in Peace, handsome man

.

Flora won her 4th C.C. under Sandra Fleming (Palacecraig) and the dog C.C., his 2nd, was won by Keith and Judith's Judika Prairie Gold.  George was also BoB. Congratulations !!

09/05/04

Birmingham Championship show with over 200 cockers entered and our small kennel had another lovely day. Thanks to judge Geir Flyckt Pedersen (Louline) for his judgements and his kind, sympathetic handling of the dogs. Edith Fowles and Mike Wildman were over the moon to take the Reserve C.C. with their blue boy Charbonnel Shake'n'Stevens, behind Penny Lester's top winning Copper Glow, and I was more than happy to win the Minor Puppy bitch class with Charbonnel Fair Rouge (Bronte) out of 13 bitches, and then to win Junior bitch with Charbonnel Silhouette and take the Reserve C.C. with her at 14 months was the icing on the cake. Almost 12 months to the day that she was stolen !! thanks to all my friends for their kindness on the day. To see 3 of your homebred youngsters, in 3 different colours, win at one show is very satisfying.........

06/05/04

Flora has done it !! Subject to KC confirmation she is now SHOW CHAMPION CHARBONNEL FRANKETTE, our 8th homebred show champion. Many Thanks to Mr. Derek Shapland (Deracor) for her crowning 3rd C.C. at WELKS championship show, and to Annie Kettle and Angie Hackett for the equally important other 2 C.C's.! Flora is full sister to Lynette, so she is Frankie's 2nd daughter to be made up, and of course Amorette is the proud mum again....

18/04/04

Our beautiful Charbonnel Silhouette, Cilla, had a wonderful day today at North Wales Gundog Club's Open Show when she won BoB and BIS !! Breed Judge was Tina Beswick (Cachel) and BIS judge was Christopher Bexon (Oldfield).  Many Thanks....."

16/04/04

10/04/04

A wonderful day at the Cocker Club of Scotland's Championship Show, when Warlord took his 29th CC and 21st BoB, taking the crown of "Top Winning Black Male Cocker Spaniel of all Time in the UK". The judge was Sally Ellison (Withiflor) and the final decision for BIS was made by the referee George Findlay (Daltonare) A BIG thank you to all the judges who made this achievement possible........... Our young black bitch and latest star Charbonnel Silhouette, Frankie's daughter from Amorette, also delighted us by winning her junior class and thus her final points for her junior warrant. Thanks to judge Helen MacDonald (Moonwood). Cilla also won BoB and 2nd in the Gundog Group on the 12th of April, breed judge Ken Holmes (Kenan), group judge Colin Woodward (Wadeson) at Accrington and District CA Open show.

28/03/04

I didn't go to any shows today, but my kennel was well represented ,nevertheless, at all levels.

Firstly, Charbonnel Desert Gold was winning the Res. CACIB at Luxembourg show (68 entries) under Mr. Nagy (Hungary) for his owners Patrice and Danielle Raquin, Weeping Willows kennel. He is now coming into his own, having carried out all his working tests successfully, and having clear eyes and excellent hips, he is ready for the ring, although he has yet to grow the coat he lost in the field.

Congratulations also to Mike and Edith for another lovely win with Charbonnel Shake'n'Stevens, who went BIS at North Wales Cocker Spaniel Club Open Show under Sheena Lill (Rosbercon). The photo shows Jamie now, at 2 years of age, maturing into a handsome young man......

Also Tracey had a lovely day with her young black bitch Quintavia Quintessence (Betty) who won Reserve Best in Show all breeds at Wolverhampton Canine Society under Kim Gain (breed) and Michael Boothroyd (BIS). Betty is by Charbonnel Roulette x Charbonnel Playtime at Quintavia and she typifies the lovely cobby cocker that Bryan continues to produce. Well done Girls !!

24/03/04

An exciting day.......our Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen, Afterglow Greta Garbo at Charbonnel (a Woody Woodpecker daughter) has been mated to Soletrader Dunc 'n' Disorderly......fingers crossed for a successful liaison this time. Please visit www.bgvclub.co.uk to see Duncan winning his first C.C. !! Garbo can be seen as a puppy on my favourite photos page.

20/03/04

Our black dog Charbonnel Dutch Touch has 'performed' for the first time, mating one of my Warlord daughters. Johnny is as yet unshown due to a heavy puppy coat, but I hope to bring him out later in 2004.He has a wonderful happy-go-lucky temperament, as have all my dogs.

15/03/04

" CLEAN SWEEP " !!!!!

Today the results came back for the six dogs we had DNA tested by OptiGen. All 6 ,including all 4 of my stud dogs, were returned as genotype A1, which means these 6 will not only never develop PRA (Progressive Retinal Atrophy) but they also will never produce a clinical case. These results also help me to determine the eye status for at least 3 of my other bitches. Please see the link to the OptiGen site (in my Health links list) for more information on how to go about testing YOUR cockers.

13/03/04
